Introduction

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a tax identification number required for almost every financial or legal activity in Portugal. Whether you’re renting an apartment, opening a bank account, signing up for utilities, or preparing for a visa application, obtaining your NIF is the first critical step.

Touchdown helps you get your NIF remotely, no matter where you are in the world. Touchdown simplifies the process by offering a fully NIF setup service. You won’t need to travel to Portugal—we’ll handle all the paperwork and communication with the tax office on your behalf.

Eligibility

To apply for a NIF, you must:

  • Have a valid passport (for non-EU nationals)

  • Provide proof of your current address (utility bill, bank statement, or rental contract)

  • Sign a Power of Attorney (PoA) allowing our Team to be the intermediaries between yourself and the tax authorities

What is a NIF?

The NIF is Portugal’s unique tax identification number. It’s essential for:

  • Opening a Portuguese bank account.

  • Renting or buying property.

  • Paying taxes or accessing public services.

  • Setting up utilities (electricity, internet, etc.).

  • Applying for visas, such as D7 or D8.

Without a NIF, it’s nearly impossible to complete any financial or administrative tasks in Portugal.
